Automatic Edge Guiding

Continuous web products not only require the same tension throughout the rewind process, but they also need a way to insure the edge of the web is the same through the winding process. In this sketch, a Proportion-Air unit is being used on a pneumatic cylinder to control the position of the edge of the web based on feedback from an edge guide sensor, known as edge gilding.

Typically the sensor signal is fed back to a PLC or computer and the computer controls the speed at which the Proportion-Air unit responds to change. Based on pneumatic response needed, a QB1 or QB3 can be used for this application.

Subtle changes in the web tension causes the cylinder to react; this-in-turn causes our pressure control device to increase or decrease pressure (force) on the cylinder to maintain the desired tension and keep the web in position.
