Pensacola, Florida was my work destination for two weeks of July. What a wonder place to work and visit! The airport is small and easy to maneuver around. The scenery is typical coastal Florida: Beautiful, and there is nothing like a sunset on the Gulf of Mexico. I was not let down several of the evenings I was there. I captured many sunset photos during the visit.
One of the memorable dinners I had while there was shrimp and grits. Most from the north do not like grits, but it’s only because we aren’t very good at cooking them there. Southerners make grits that are absolutely astounding – with or without shrimp. Proper shrimp and grits have a shrimp-filled “tomato stew” which includes onions, tomatoes, garlic and spices poured over cheesy grits. The flavor is unbelievable! I was also treated to a homemade, perfectly cooked steak dinner with mashed potatoes and green beans made by Chef Lauren another evening. There is nothing like a homemade dinner when you are traveling.
I was able to travel one day to Mobile, Alabama. Mobile is a nice industrial city on Mobile Bay. I visited several factories in the area. Lunch in Mobile was at a fish and gumbo house. They had a lunch buffet that included a variety of southern delicacies but my favorite was their homemade gumbo over rice.
Summertime weather in Florida is unpredictable. I got to see a storm front as it approached Pensacola and watch as it dumped lots of rain in its short half hour visit over the city. I was glad that I wasn’t on a boat in the water when it made landfall.
The highlight of the last day was to see the Navy’s Blue Angels practice for their Pensacola air show that took place Friday and Saturday July 11th and 12th. Their maneuvers were amazing and the sound – there’s nothing like it.
