Air-Over-Oil Welding

Shop air can be used to control tip force in an air-over-oil welding application. This process employs an intensification principle to produce a smooth non-shock welding force.

This set up is typically used instead of pneumatic only when smoothness is required of the operation in lieu of the weld tips slamming together, thus reducing the wear of the tips.

In this sketch, a QB2 is controlling air pressure over oil to control the pressure of the oil to the cylinder. A stainless steel DST transducer is providing direct feedback to the QB2 of the oil pressure.  An orifice is used on the cylinder exhaust to soften the weld tip and help control overall speed during the process.

Welding applications are very sensitive to force. This process provides excellent control of weld tip force.
